Rug Sizing + Placement

Lately I’ve been getting into rugs! Unusual I know but I feel like rugs can make or break a room. The most common mistake I encounter is that people choose a rug that is much too small in relation to their furniture. Rugs create visual balance to the room, they zone an area, create warmth and an inviting space for everyone to enjoy.

The size of the rug is determined by the furniture that will stand on it. One basic rule is that the rug should not be smaller than the length and width of the sofa or dining table.

Dining Table - enough room to pull out the chair and the chair stays on the rug. Guide is about 60 - 70 centimetres bigger than the table top. TIP: Jute is a good choice for under your dining table as it is hard wearing.

Living Room - The rug should protrude all around the side of your furniture. Your lounge suite will determine the size of your rug. For example, If you have a large sofa or a chaise that seats over 6 - 7 people then you are looking at a rug size of 3m x 4m.

Bedroom - Choose a rug that id in proportion to your room and bed. If you havre a large bedroom with plenty of space around the bed, you may want to buy a very large rug to act as a visual actor. 60cms - 70cms on each side of the bed and which either takes in or excludes the bedside tables. Rugs in the bedroom are great to anchor your bed and also great if you have floor boards to create warmth.

Hallway - Long, narrow and jute rugs that don’t add too much height and don’t collect dirt or grit are great for this space. A even more practical idea is if the rug can be reversible if stains occur. Avoid rugs with fringes as the fringes will quickly wear out given the high traffic area.
